Jaecoo 7 Becomes First Chinese Car to Lead UK Monthly Sales

The surge underscores strong plug-in demand driven by sharp pricing despite rising costs.

Overview

  • SMMT data shows the Jaecoo 7 logged 10,064 registrations in March, topping the Ford Puma at 9,193 and the Nissan Qashqai at 8,718.
  • UK new-car registrations rose 6.6% to 380,627, the strongest month since 2019, as electrified vehicles set records with BEVs at 22.6%, PHEVs at 13%, and hybrids at 15.8% market share.
  • Jaecoo says its plug-in hybrid made up 85% of Jaecoo 7 sales, helped by a £35,175 price point, up to 56 miles of electric-only range, and a 7-year warranty.
  • The model ranks second year to date with 15,569 registrations, closing on the Ford Puma’s 16,128 as Jaecoo and sister brand Omoda expand to 124 UK retail sites.
  • SMMT warned that heavy discounting, battery costs running about 30% above expectations, a 140% jump in public charging prices over five years, and the Iran conflict could sap confidence and margins.
