Jacksonville and St. Johns County Launch Joint Review After Inaugural IRONMAN Disrupts Traffic and Businesses

Officials will review route design, traffic planning, public notice and safety measures to prevent repeat problems.

Overview

  • The first full-distance IRONMAN in the region produced extensive road closures and detours that left parts of Ponte Vedra, Nocatee and other commercial areas effectively isolated and prompted complaints from residents and merchants.
  • Emergency crews treated multiple patients and Jacksonville Fire Rescue said 18 people were hospitalized during the event, including seven cyclists, while crash reports list at least seven traffic incidents on the course.
  • Race-day reports show specific serious incidents, including an athlete struck by a truck near Crosswater Parkway and an officer whose foot was run over while directing traffic; a driver was cited in one crash and other incidents remain under review.
  • The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office ran one of its largest single-day operations in years, deploying nearly 600 officers and staffing more than 400 intersections to manage the nearly 2,000 athletes on the 140.6-mile course.
  • St. Johns County commissioners pressed for better advance notice after businesses reported lost sales — one grocery was estimated to have lost about $20,000 — and city and county leaders have committed to a joint after-action review while organizers plan to apply lessons for future races.
