Jackknifed Semi Crosses Median on 210 Freeway in Irwindale, Killing One

CHP is collecting vehicle inspections, data, footage and witness statements to determine whether speed, mechanical failure, driver error, road conditions or a medical event caused the crash.

Overview

  • A semi-truck traveling eastbound reportedly jackknifed, breached the concrete center divider and struck westbound vehicles on the 210 Freeway near Irwindale Avenue, in a crash that occurred Saturday morning and forced an emergency response.
  • One woman was pronounced dead at the scene and authorities have not released her identity pending next-of-kin notification.
  • The truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators as CHP inspects the big rig and gathers vehicle data and surveillance or dashcam footage.
  • Emergency crews closed all westbound lanes and multiple eastbound lanes, creating miles of backups and prompting a SigAlert while tow and recovery teams cleared the wreckage.
  • Investigators are examining possible causes common to large-truck wrecks—excessive speed, mechanical failure, driver error, road or weather conditions, or a medical emergency—and will review maintenance records, driver logs and electronic vehicle data as the probe continues.
