IW Study Finds Iranian Nationals in Germany Highly Integrated Into the Labor Market

Early-2026 asylum data show more Iranians are being granted protection in Germany.

Overview

  • Of roughly 162,000 Iranian nationals in Germany, 58.6% of those of working age hold social-insurance jobs, compared with 40–44% for Afghans, Iraqis and Syrians.
  • Some 43.3% of employed Iranians have a university degree, versus 19.5% among other foreign workers.
  • About 73.1% work in skilled positions and 31.7% as specialists or experts, with notable concentrations in health care, technical and scientific services, and education.
  • Iranian workers earn an average €3,528 gross per month compared with €3,204 for other immigrants, and women account for 41% of Iranian employees.
  • BAMF reports a 27.6% protection rate for Iranian asylum applications in January–February 2026, up from 22.8% last year, while the IW analysis reflects data only through late 2025.
