IVRI Confirms Carbofuran Poisoning in Uttar Pradesh Vulture Deaths

Officials opened a wildlife case to find who set out poisoned rice for stray dogs.

Overview

  • Indian Veterinary Research Institute toxicology found lethal carbofuran in vulture organs, dog tissue, and cooked rice collected from the site.
  • Investigators say the birds died after eating dog carcasses, following rice bait laced with the insecticide that killed the dogs.
  • The mass deaths, discovered April 7 in farm fields near Semrai village in the Bhira range, also left five vultures unconscious who were treated and released.
  • Forest officials registered an FIR under the Wildlife Protection Act and are working with police to trace suspects for prosecution.
  • The department plans village outreach on the dangers to people and wildlife from carbofuran, which India restricts to 3% granules.
