IU Graduate Fatally Shot in Downtown Indianapolis Parking Garage

Police say detectives have made meaningful progress in an active homicide probe that has not yet identified a suspect.

Overview

  • Officers found 23-year-old Brett Scrogham wounded in the upper level of the public garage at 101 S. Capitol Ave. after witnesses heard a gunshot and saw a person run, and he later died from his injuries.
  • Scrogham was a recent graduate of Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and worked as a development analyst; friends and neighbors describe him as community-minded and deeply involved in faith and campus groups.
  • IMPD detained and later released a person at the scene and says it is making meaningful progress in the investigation but has not issued a formal suspect description or announced an arrest.
  • Mayor Joe Hogsett condemned the killing, urged residents to share tips with detectives, and police have asked anyone with information to contact IMPD or Crime Stoppers.
  • The slaying is the second downtown homicide in less than a week and comes as the department reports 38 homicides so far this year compared with 50 at the same point last year, a context officials cite while investigating patterns of urban violence.
