Italy Releases 130,000 Baby Octopuses to Curb Blue Crab Invasion

The release of native octopus paralarvae into the Adriatic is an experimental move to support intensified crab fishing.

  • Researchers from the University of Bologna working with Emilia-Romagna authorities released about 130,000 common octopus paralarvae this week and placed artificial dens off Riccione and Cesenatico to help survival.
  • Scientists warn paralarval mortality is extremely high, typically 99–99.9 percent, so only a tiny share of the released animals are likely to reach adulthood and prey on blue crabs.
  • A mature common octopus can eat up to about four medium blue crabs a day, which gives survivors the potential to reduce local crab numbers but does not promise eradication.
  • Officials pair the Octo-Blu releases with stepped-up commercial harvesting and campaigns to get consumers to buy blue crab after the invader caused roughly €170–200 million in damage to shellfish and fisheries.
  • Researchers will continue breeding and planning further batches and say long-term monitoring is needed to track octopus survival, possible ecosystem side effects, and any measurable drop in blue-crab populations.
