Italy Passes Overhaul of Final Exam, Restores ‘Maturità’ for 2026

The overhaul sets a new format with dedicated funding for the secondary school exit exam starting in 2026.

Overview

  • Parliament gave final approval to the reform with a 138–91 vote and nine abstentions, making it law.
  • The new rules take effect for the June 2026 session, with the education ministry to designate the four oral subjects each January.
  • Students must complete all components, including the oral; a voluntary refusal to answer at the interview results in automatic failure.
  • The oral no longer begins from commission-provided material, and commissions shrink to five members: two internal, two external, plus an external president.
  • The system keeps a 100-point maximum and 60 to pass, lowers the threshold for up to 3 bonus points to 90, funds teacher contracts and commissioner training, tightens school-trip and school‑work safety with INAIL coverage, and makes the 4+2 technical‑professional track ordinary.
