Italy Issues 'Lifetime' Electronic ID Renewals for People Aged 70

The reform reduces routine renewals for elderly people, preserving limits on the card's electronic functions.

Overview

  • From Thursday, July 30, 2026 the government began issuing renewed electronic identity cards (CIE) with no printed expiry for applicants who are already 70 on the day they apply.
  • The change applies only to renewal requests submitted on or after July 30 and does not alter CIEs already in circulation, which keep their printed expiry dates until replaced.
  • The physical card will show the word “ILLIMITATA” where the expiry date normally appears and an MRZ code of “990101” to flag unlimited validity to automated systems.
  • Technical and functional limits remain: the chip’s electronic authentication certificate still expires after ten years so the card will stop working for online login without renewal, and some categories keep shorter terms (fingerprint‑impaired: up to 12 months; applicants for international protection: three years).
  • Paper identity cards lose validity for travel from August 3, 2026 with limited transitional allowances through January 31, 2027, and ordinary application steps and fees for the CIE stay unchanged.
