Italy Activates Alcolock Mandate as Transport Ministry Publishes Approved List

An official list on the Portale dell’Automobilista opens the operational phase after last year’s legal change.

Overview

  • The Transport Ministry posted the first roster of approved alcolock devices, authorized installers and compatible vehicle models, enabling enforcement to begin.
  • Two approved models are listed from Autobynet and Zaldy, with installation currently available at 49 workshops for one device and three for the other, and the list is subject to updates.
  • Drivers definitively convicted for a blood alcohol level over 0.8 g/l must use vehicles fitted with an alcolock for two years, extended to three years if the level exceeded 1.5 g/l.
  • The device blocks engine start if alcohol is detected, requires annual calibration, applies to cars and trucks but not motorcycles, and anyone using the vehicle must pass the breath test.
  • Estimated outlays of roughly €1,500–2,000 plus calibration, maintenance and mouthpieces fall on the sanctioned driver, while industry and consumer groups warn of limited compatibility for older cars, few authorized installers and burdens for households sharing a single vehicle.
