ISRO Finalizes Bharatiya Antariksh Station Design With 2028 First Module and 2035 Full Operations

The government says the effort is funded through the expanded Gaganyaan program with subsystems aligned to international standards.

Overview

  • Science Minister Jitendra Singh told Parliament that ISRO has completed the five‑module station’s overall configuration, which a national‑level committee has reviewed.
  • The Union Cabinet’s September 2024 decision cleared development and launch of the base module BAS‑01, with liftoff targeted by 2028.
  • The revised Gaganyaan allocation now totals Rs 20,193 crore and covers precursor missions as well as development and launch of BAS‑01.
  • ISRO is building BAS‑01 subsystems to international standards to ensure interoperability and is exploring collaboration and access to niche test facilities with other agencies.
  • India’s Gaganyaan crewed demonstration to Low Earth Orbit is intended to validate capabilities for the station, positioning the country to join the small group that has operated national space stations.
