Israeli Strikes in Lebanon Kill Seven Despite Extended Ceasefire

The strikes show the US-brokered pause has not stopped cross-border fighting.

Overview

  • Lebanese authorities reported seven deaths in strikes on southern towns and in a missile hit near Baalbek that killed Islamic Jihad commander Wael Abdel Halim and his 17-year-old daughter.
  • The Israeli military issued new evacuation orders for villages in southern Lebanon, and state media said air raids followed the warnings in several areas near Sidon.
  • Envoys from Lebanon and Israel agreed in Washington to extend a 45-day pause, with a US-facilitated security track slated to start May 29 and another round of talks planned for June 2–3.
  • Hezbollah rejected the direct talks as a dead end and said it struck a military target in northern Israel, alongside other announced operations against Israeli forces in the south.
  • Lebanon’s Health Ministry updated the nationwide toll since March 2 to 2,988 killed and 9,210 injured, while aid and business groups cited more than 1.2 million displaced and losses topping $25 billion with about $12 billion needed for initial rebuilding.
