Israel Confirms Killing of Hamas Military Chief in Gaza Strike

The operation signals Israel will keep hunting Hamas commanders during a U.S.-backed truce.

Overview

  • Israeli and Hamas officials confirmed Saturday that Izz al-Din al-Haddad died after a Friday precision strike in Gaza City.
  • Al-Haddad, nicknamed “The Ghost,” rose to lead Hamas’s military wing in Gaza after Mohammad Sinwar was killed in May 2025, and Israel accused him of helping plan the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks and running the hostage system.
  • Hamas said his wife and 19-year-old daughter were killed with him, and a funeral was held in central Gaza, as medics also reported other civilians killed and wounded in nearby strikes.
  • The killing took place during a U.S.-backed truce as indirect talks on President Donald Trump’s post-war plan stalled, with Israel saying its forces still control more than half of Gaza.
  • New strikes on Sunday killed at least eight Palestinians, and the Israeli military said it also killed Bahaa Baroud, a Hamas operations commander, in a separate attack in Gaza City.
