Overview

  • On Monday Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles toward Israel that the Israel Defense Forces said were intercepted with no reported injuries.
  • Hours later Israel said it struck military targets inside Iran with explosions reported in Tehran, Isfahan, Tabriz and near the Mahshahr petrochemical complex.
  • President Donald Trump publicly urged both sides to show restraint and reportedly phoned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to press him not to retaliate further.
  • Hezbollah and Yemen’s Houthi movement participated in attacks or claimed strikes and the exchanges have prompted airspace closures, shipping disruptions and a jump in oil prices.
  • The exchanges are the sharpest breach of the April 8 truce and they threaten to derail talks over sanctions, frozen assets and an agreed halt to fighting in Lebanon that mediators have been pursuing.
