Island-Wide Poll Finds Strong EU Support and Backing for Irish Unity Within EU

The results point to pressure for greater independence from the United States as Ireland prepares to lead the EU in July.

Overview

  • An Amárach Research survey for European Movement Ireland polled 1,200 adults north and south in late March with a margin of error of ±2.2%, providing a fresh snapshot of views on the EU and Irish unity.
  • Support for EU membership remains high at 82% in the Republic of Ireland and 76% in Northern Ireland, underscoring sustained backing for the bloc across the island.
  • Asked about a united Ireland within the EU, 59% in the Republic and 63% in Northern Ireland said they would vote in favour if a referendum were held tomorrow.
  • In Northern Ireland, 73% said they would back the UK rejoining the EU and 73% want the region to have a greater say at EU level because many EU single market rules still apply there.
  • Fewer people now think the EU is on the right track, down from 58% in 2023 to 45% this year, with cost of living, migration, housing, energy, and defence and security ranking as top concerns that could shape Ireland’s coming EU Council presidency.
