Islamabad Overhauls Local Government With Three Town Corporations

A revised ECP timetable moves the process forward toward indirect mayoral selection under Punjab’s model.

Overview

  • The federal government approved replacing the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad with three town corporations aligned with the capital’s three National Assembly constituencies, each with administrative and financial autonomy.
  • Each town will have one mayor and two deputy mayors elected indirectly by union council chairmen for four-year terms.
  • The Election Commission’s revised schedule shows nominations submitted by December 30, 2025, preliminary lists issued on December 31, and scrutiny now in progress with appeals set for January 7–10 and decisions due by January 15.
  • The final candidate list is slated for January 16, withdrawals for January 17, election symbols for January 19, and union council voting for February 15, 2026.
  • Municipal functions now with the Capital Development Authority, including finance, drainage, development projects, and sanitation, are planned for gradual transfer to the new town bodies, pending legal amendments and new delimitations.
