Islamabad Expands Electric Bus Network With New Depot, 160 Buses and Rawat Extension

Officials set a near-term goal to double daily ridership by scaling charging capacity plus digital tools.

Overview

  • Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi inaugurated a purpose-built depot and charging centre, bringing the fleet to 160 buses operating across 21 routes.
  • The service now extends to Rawat, broadening coverage alongside the existing Metro Bus system to improve regional connectivity.
  • Current daily ridership stands at about 125,000 passengers with an official target of 250,000.
  • The depot is designed for 64 chargers with 50 installed so far, and each unit can charge two buses within two hours.
  • The network is integrated with Google for real-time navigation and monitoring, with routes prioritised for male and female students, while plans are underway to restore the local rail service and begin local electric-bus manufacturing at HIT Pakistan.
