Irish Watchdog Orders Removal of Over 1,100 ‘Baby Sleep Pillows’ From Online Marketplaces

Health officials warn the soft, pillow-like products can suffocate or overheat infants, with regulators ordering takedowns and advising refunds.

Overview

  • The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission issued takedown notices that led to the removal of roughly 1,115 online listings for so-called baby sleep pillows from platforms such as Amazon, AliExpress, Fruugo and Joom.
  • Regulators say the products are soft, often animal-shaped cushions marketed as sleep aids or positioners and that they can cause death by suffocation or by raising a baby’s body temperature.
  • The HSE’s public health advice restates that babies should sleep on their backs on a firm, well-fitting mattress with no pillows, cushions or loose items in the cot because soft surfaces allow a baby’s head to sink and raise SIDS risk.
  • The CCPC describes the trend as primarily an online phenomenon driven by international marketplaces, and it is continuing market surveillance while urging consumers who bought the items to seek refunds and report concerns.
  • The action follows past CCPC moves on hazardous infant products, including a 2022 ban on self-feeding pillows, and signals closer scrutiny of cross-border e-commerce listings that make risky goods available to Irish parents.
