Irish Court Orders Revolut to Give Sky Details of 304 Suspected IPTV Subscribers

The disclosure paves the way for rights holders to trace payments and move quickly against resellers linked to pirated sports streams.

Overview

  • An Irish High Court order requires Revolut Bank UAB to send Sky names and addresses for 304 subscribers and details of 10 resellers on an encrypted spreadsheet within 28 days.
  • Sky told the court it plans to use the data to file civil cases against resellers and some end users, while noting it is not feasible to sue all 304 subscribers.
  • The case stems from Sky’s probe of Wexford resident David Dunbar, who ran the “IPTV is Easy” service and was hit with €480,000 in damages and a €30,000 contempt fine after breaching data preservation orders.
  • Revolut account records showed payments from 12 resellers and 304 customers to Dunbar, and Sky has already issued proceedings against two resellers as it targets ongoing sales before the Premier League season ends.
  • A Norwich Pharmacal-style order lets courts compel a third party to reveal information tied to wrongdoing, and Sky says other broadcasters including Premier Sports, GAA+, LOITV and Clubber TV back the push that now uses bank records as a key enforcement tool.
