Ireland Asks EU Leaders to Tackle Israeli Seizure of Gaza Flotilla

The Taoiseach has asked the European Council to put the detention of flotilla activists on the June summit agenda so leaders can consider suspending parts of the EU–Israel Association Agreement.

Overview

  • The Irish government has formally asked European Council President António Costa to place Israel’s interception and detention of Global Sumud Flotilla activists on the 18–19 June summit agenda and to consider suspending parts or all of the EU–Israel Association Agreement.
  • Organisers and video footage report hundreds of people were detained after Israeli forces boarded the flotilla, with at least 12 Irish citizens among those held and footage showing national security minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir walking among detainees who appear kneeling and bound.
  • Ireland’s request frames the flotilla episode as part of a pattern of conduct it says breaches international norms and underlines growing Irish concern about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and settlement expansion in the West Bank.
  • Taoiseach Micheál Martin has raised the issue in bilateral talks with French president Emmanuel Macron, Pope Leo XIV, and Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni while preparing to take the EU Council presidency on 1 July.
  • The move builds on recent EU steps that sanctioned violent West Bank settlers and on Commission plans to restrict trade in settlement goods, but any suspension of the Association Agreement would need consensus among the 27 member states and would mark a significant escalation.
