IRCTC Scales Up AI and Automation as Online Bookings and Catering Hit New Peaks

The state-owned operator is using machine learning and live kitchen surveillance to protect ticketing access and enforce food hygiene by detecting fraud and safety breaches in real time.

Overview

  • IRCTC reported record digital volumes in FY 2025-26, averaging 14.53 lakh ticket bookings per day and setting a per-minute high of 37,410 bookings and a single-day high of 18.40 lakh tickets in August 2025.
  • To curb misuse during high-traffic windows, the corporation deactivated about 3.03 crore suspicious user IDs, put roughly 6.05 crore IDs under revalidation, lodged 501 complaints on the National Cyber Crime Portal for 4.18 lakh suspicious PNRs, and blocked 13,343 email domains.
  • The catering arm now serves roughly 58–60 crore meals a year with e-catering active at more than 425 stations and e-pantry bookings and election-train meal supplies showing strong uptake across the network.
  • IRCTC has expanded AI kitchen monitoring to over 800 base kitchens using about 2,394 cameras tied to a central war room that flags nine hygiene issues, generates roughly 350 alerts daily, and triggers corrective action within two hours.
  • The operator is also rolling out automated customer tools such as the AskDisha chatbot and a multi-language helpline while coordinating with cybercrime units and food regulators, a shift that could improve access for genuine passengers but increase enforcement and oversight for suppliers.
