Iran’s President Begins Two-Day State Visit to Pakistan

Tehran will formally thank Pakistan for mediating the Islamabad MoU to press for concrete follow-up on trade, energy, border security and regional connectivity.

Overview

  • The two-day state visit begins Tuesday, June 23, and will include meetings between President Masoud Pezeshkian and Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif along with calls from the Senate chairman, National Assembly speaker and the deputy prime minister.
  • The trip follows the recent Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the United States and reported US–Iran talks in Switzerland that Pakistani and Qatari mediators said produced a roadmap for a final deal.
  • Officials say the visit will review the full spectrum of PakistanIran relations and seek concrete cooperation on trade, energy, border security, people-to-people exchanges and regional transport links.
  • Pezeshkian arrives with a high-level delegation of ministers and senior officials and will use the visit to formally express Tehran’s gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for Pakistan’s mediation role.
  • If the visit advances MoU implementation it could speed practical steps on cross-border energy and trade ties, strengthen Pakistan’s standing as a regional mediator and shape the timetable for follow-up diplomacy now being worked out in Geneva and Burgenstock.
