Ipswich Teenager Jake McMillan Convicted of Christmas Day Murder of Billy McNicholl

Sentencing is scheduled for Monday following the jury's guilty verdict.

Overview

  • A jury at Ipswich Crown Court found McMillan guilty after a three-week trial that examined forensic, video and physical evidence.
  • A Home Office post-mortem recorded head injuries and a stab wound to the right shoulder, with multiple facial fractures and a Nike Air Force One footwear impression on the victim’s T-shirt.
  • CCTV and doorbell footage showed McMillan spent about two hours at the flat on Christmas Day, while fingerprints, palm prints, DNA and footprints linked him to the scene.
  • Prosecutors said he disposed of clothing and dumped the victim’s phones in the River Orwell; the devices were recovered and CCTV showed him heading toward the bridge after the visit.
  • McMillan was arrested on January 22, 2025, re-arrested in July and later charged with murder and being concerned in cannabis supply, as the victim’s family and Suffolk Constabulary welcomed the verdict even as the exact motive may remain unclear.
