iPhone Air Roughly Doubles Plus Model’s Launch-Window Share, Ookla Finds

The crowdsourced Speedtest snapshot offers an indirect view of adoption, as Apple does not break out iPhone sales by model.

Overview

  • Ookla’s U.S. Speedtest data for Q4 2025 shows the iPhone Air at 6.8% of iPhone 17–generation samples, up from 2.9% for the iPhone 16 Plus in the comparable window a year earlier.
  • The Air’s gains appear to have coincided with a shift from the iPhone 17 Pro, whose share fell from 34.9% to 30.6%, while the Pro Max remained essentially flat at about 55.5%.
  • Adoption was stronger in several international markets, reaching 11.2% in South Korea, 8.9% in Japan, and 8.4% in Singapore, according to Ookla.
  • Separate testing indicates Apple’s C1X modem in the Air nears the Qualcomm X80 on download speeds and posts lower latency in 19 of 22 markets, though the X80 retains up to a 32% edge on uploads.
  • Coverage notes sample-bias and early timing effects inherent to Speedtest data, framing the Air as a relative success that has surpassed the outgoing Plus despite remaining a niche choice.
