IPC Says 1.4 Million Gazans Will Face Acute Food Insecurity Through December

Declining aid funding and restricted border crossings threaten to erase recent nutrition gains and push more people into emergency conditions.

Overview

  • The UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification reported on Thursday that about 1.4 million people, or roughly 67% of Gaza’s population, are projected to face crisis-or-worse food insecurity through December.
  • The analysis found acute malnutrition among children has eased since the October 2025 ceasefire but remains fragile with an estimated 74,200 children under five needing treatment this year including over 11,400 severe cases.
  • Humanitarian deliveries and commercial flows produced measurable improvements in May when food parcels reached about 1.5 million people and cash and nutrition support expanded, but aid levels have fallen since February.
  • The World Food Programme warned it needs more than $420 million to avoid deeper cuts that would shrink cash assistance and food rations already reduced for hundreds of thousands of households.
  • Only the Kerem Shalom/Abu Salem crossing is open for major deliveries, Israeli authorities dispute aspects of the IPC findings, and joint UN/EU/World Bank estimates show massive damage to homes, farms and infrastructure that will hinder recovery.
