Iowa State Shuts Down Women’s Gymnastics Program After Season Cancellation

University leaders cite persistent internal conflicts as the reason.

Overview

  • Athletic director Jamie Pollard announced on March 3 that the program is discontinued, following last month’s decision to end the 2025–26 season because of “unreconcilable” conflicts that made safe training and competition impossible.
  • Iowa State will honor scholarships for current and incoming gymnasts, assist those who enter the transfer portal, and seek NCAA waivers to grant an additional year of eligibility.
  • Contracts for the coaching staff, including head coach Ashley Miles Greig, will not be renewed.
  • The university will select another women’s sport to preserve participation opportunities, and Pollard says finances did not drive the decision.
  • A leadership council recommended discontinuation after a 2018 review and a 2023 independent evaluation, as former staff, athletes and alumni publicly criticize ISU leadership and some reporting points to disputed 2025 financial losses.
