IOC Will Offer Every Eligible Olympian a $10,000 Grant

Applications are to open later in 2026 with first payments expected in 2027 under a program meant to support athletes’ careers rather than serve as prize money.

Overview

  • The IOC announced the Fit for the Future Olympian Grant on June 24, 2026, saying every athlete who competes at the Olympics can apply for a $10,000 payment provided they meet integrity rules such as no doping or ethics violations.
  • The committee said roughly $140 million has been allocated per four‑year Olympic cycle to finance the grants though some outlets reported a $100 million figure and the IOC has yet to publish final financing details.
  • Athletes from Milano Cortina 2026 will be eligible retroactively and competitors at Los Angeles 2028 will also qualify, with applications to be submitted via the IOC’s Athlete365 platform and approved funds to be distributed through National Olympic Committees.
  • IOC leaders and Athletes’ Commission chair Pau Gasol framed the payment as support for training or career transition rather than prize money, but questions remain about how the program will interact with existing Olympic Solidarity payments and commercial revenue shares.
  • The grant was part of broader Fit for the Future reforms approved at the 146th IOC Session that also changed host-selection steps and delayed the 2036 host award, a package the IOC says aims to modernize athlete support and governance.
