IOC Names Tokyo, Shanghai, Montreal and Orlando as 2028 Olympic Qualifier Hosts

The series will lock in berths for youth-focused events only weeks before the Los Angeles Games.

Overview

  • The IOC named Tokyo (May 4–7), Shanghai (May 11–14), Montreal (June 1–4) and Orlando (June 8–11) as the four stops for the 2028 Olympic Qualifier Series.
  • The circuit will finalize Olympic places in 3x3 basketball, beach volleyball, BMX freestyle, climbing, skateboarding and flag football, which will make its Olympic debut in Los Angeles.
  • Montreal will host at Olympic Park, the 1976 Games site that is replacing the stadium roof and technical ring with completion targeted for 2028.
  • Organizers project roughly 2,000 participants, about 500 athletes and around 70,000 spectators, with a $28 million budget that includes about $22 million from public funds.
  • Canadian Olympic Committee leaders say the event will leave facilities such as a climbing wall and skate park, while stressing it is not a commitment to a future Olympic bid.
