Investigators Uncover 117 Buried Dogs at Fortuna ‘No‑Kill’ Rescue

Forensic exams found many of the animals had gunshot wounds and a multiagency probe is tracing microchips and records to identify victims.

Overview

  • The Humboldt County Major Crimes Division excavated the rescue property on Friday and recovered 117 intact canine remains from two dig sites.
  • Forensic veterinarians X‑rayed 70 of the bodies and found bullet fragments in many of them, leading investigators to preliminarily cite gunshot wounds as the cause of death for multiple animals.
  • Search teams also found 21 skulls, hundreds of bones, about six loose microchips, and more than 600 dog collars, and they identified a barn area they believe was used to kill dogs.
  • The multiagency investigation includes the sheriff’s office, California DOJ, the FBI, the USDA, and forensic teams; records and electronics were seized and no criminal charges have been filed yet pending prosecutor review.
  • Miranda’s Rescue remains open with roughly 50 animals under monitoring while investigators trace microchips and transfer records after finding that hundreds of animals were taken in since January 2025 with many unaccounted for.
