Interlune and Vermeer Expand Partnership to Build Mission-Ready Lunar Construction Equipment

A mission-ready autonomous site-preparation tool is planned for 2028 to support NASA’s Moon Base program by preparing landing pads, roads and utility trenches.

Overview

  • Interlune and Vermeer announced on July 30, 2026 that they are broadening their collaboration to move from prototypes toward repeatable lunar construction systems aimed at operational missions.
  • The companies are targeting delivery of a mission-ready, rover-integrated site-preparation tool by 2028 to align with NASA’s Moon Base roadmap and planned lunar terrain vehicle activity.
  • This push builds on a full-scale excavator prototype unveiled in May 2025 and follows NASA’s March 2026 $30 billion, 10-year Moon Base initiative that refocused Interlune’s goals.
  • Interlune plans near-term lunar work including the Crescent Moon multispectral camera mission later in 2026 and the NASA-funded Prospect Moon extraction test slated for 2028.
  • If successful, the effort could speed early base tasks such as leveling, rock removal, compaction and trenching, lower risk for crewed landings, and expand commercial demand for rugged, highly autonomous heavy equipment.
