Insurer Data Show Hundreds of Pets Hurt by Fireworks Around Fourth of July

Because Trupanion covers about one million animals, its analysis likely understates how many pets nationwide suffer injury or severe anxiety from fireworks.

Overview

  • Trupanion reviewed claims from 2020–2025 and identified 542 fireworks-related pet injuries during the July 1–7 holiday window and 932 total fireworks-related claims across those six years.
  • The insurer recorded 1,064 noise-phobia claims from 2020–2025 and says more than 30% of those are concentrated around the Fourth of July, showing a strong holiday spike in anxiety cases.
  • State data show variation: California led with 160 total fireworks claims, Washington had 102 and Florida 71, while Texas ranked 10th for holiday claims with nine and seventh overall with 32.
  • Trupanion’s figures come from roughly one million insured pets compared with an estimated 164 million U.S. cats and dogs, so experts say the real number of affected animals is likely much higher.
  • Veterinarians advise practical steps to cut risk and stress: keep pets indoors in a secure room, close windows and curtains, play music or TV to mask noise, update ID and microchip information, avoid taking pets to displays, and trial prescribed anti-anxiety medications well before fireworks begin.
