Insured Car Storm Losses in Germany Halved in 2025

Insurers attribute the dip to a mild year, not to lower long-term risk.

Overview

  • GDV data, published Monday, show insurers paid about €650 million for storm, hail, lightning and flood damage to vehicles in 2025 after roughly €1.2 billion in 2024, with about 190,000 claims reported.
  • Losses rose in a few states, led by North Rhine-Westphalia at €200 million and Lower Saxony at €64 million, while Bremen held near €3 million.
  • Most states saw steep declines, including Baden-Württemberg down to €148 million from €530 million and Bavaria to €128 million from €281 million.
  • The statistics capture only cars with comprehensive cover, which is optional in Germany, so the overall economic damage is higher than the insured sums reported.
  • GDV’s Jörg Asmussen cautioned that a single severe local storm can reverse the annual picture, and market data from Verivox point to further increases in motor insurance premiums in 2026.
