Inquiry Launched After Off-Piste Avalanche at Tignes Kills Spanish Skier

Météo‑France has warned of marked to strong avalanche danger across the Alps.

Overview

  • Patrollers saw the slide trigger around 14:30 in the Lavachet sector, and helicopter teams located and dug out the victim, who was pronounced dead shortly after.
  • The skier, a man in his fifties of Spanish origin, was off-piste with four companions and was the only member of the group carried by the avalanche.
  • Rescuers extracted the victim in about nine minutes, and the resort said the group was equipped with avalanche transceivers.
  • Authorities have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the accident.
  • Roughly twenty avalanche fatalities have been recorded across the Alps this month, with current danger rated 3/5 in many northern massifs and 4/5 in parts of the southern Alps, the Oisans and the Pyrenees.
