Inquest Opens After Wnuczek Remains Identified, Police Identify Suspect

UK and Polish authorities now coordinate on potential charges following the Leicester discovery.

Overview

  • Leicestershire Police confirmed on Dec. 16 that human remains found in October in scrubland off Great Central Way near Watkin Road are those of Malgorzata Wnuczek, who vanished in 2006.
  • An inquest opened in Leicester on Dec. 17 and was immediately suspended pending possible criminal proceedings after a suspect was identified.
  • The coroner said prosecutors in the UK and Poland will meet to decide whether any case proceeds in Poland or England.
  • Details disclosed at the inquest included a shallow grave near the Freeman's Meadows area containing bones, women's clothing and a watch matching one seen on Wnuczek in a photo; DNA from a femur confirmed her identity, and no cause of death has yet been established.
  • Police say the investigation remains active, continue to liaise with Polish colleagues, note a 39-year-old arrested in 2023 was released with no further action, and appeal for information about Wnuczek's last movements after leaving work to catch a bus on May 31, 2006.
