ING Elevates HR Role by Appointing Hilde Garssen to Management Board

ING says the move will strengthen people, culture and organisational capabilities to support its broader transformation.

Overview

  • ING announced on Monday that Hilde Garssen will join the Management Board Banking as chief human resources officer, with the European Central Bank approving the appointment and her start date set for 1 September 2026.
  • Garssen leaves KPN to take the role after serving as KPN’s chief people officer and board member since 2018, and she brings more than 25 years of HR experience including 19 years at ABN AMRO.
  • She will succeed Ruth McGill, who left the post in November 2025, with Isaac Vitini staying on as interim CHRO until Garssen assumes the position.
  • ING has formally added the CHRO to its Management Board to make people and culture a core part of strategy as the bank pursues technological change, higher customer expectations, and growth across Europe.
  • For ING’s more than 60,000 employees the appointment could reshape recruitment, leadership development and workplace culture while investors and clients should watch for concrete HR policies and measures that follow from Garssen’s mandate.
