Overview
- INEI’s first official ENAHO-based estimate, published in June 2026, shows 30.5% of Peru’s population experienced moderate or severe food insecurity in 2025.
- Severe food insecurity affected 3.4% of the population, which INEI and RPP estimate equals roughly 1.16 million people who went a day or more without food due to lack of resources.
- Rural areas had higher prevalence (35.4%) than urban areas (29.3%), with the Selva rural reaching 39.0% and departments such as Loreto (46.9%) and Puno (43.4%) the worst hit.
- Food insecurity was concentrated among the poor and vulnerable: 42.0% of people in poverty and 49.7% in extreme poverty were affected, and rates were higher in households led by women, those with informal work, and with lower education.
- Because ENAHO included the FIES module permanently from January 2025 after FAO-supported testing, policymakers now have a regular tool to monitor trends and better target social protection, nutrition programs, and regional interventions.
