Inegi: Tourism Reached 8.7% of Mexico’s GDP in 2024, Outpacing Overall Growth

Inegi’s updated satellite account credits domestic demand for the sector’s job gains.

  • Tourism expanded 2.5% in real terms in 2024 versus 1.3% for the overall economy, according to Inegi’s updated Tourism Satellite Account.
  • Nominal tourism GDP totaled 2,713,120 million pesos in 2024, while total tourism consumption reached 4,796,438 million pesos.
  • Passenger transport (+5.6%), cultural services (+4.2%) and accommodation (+1.2%) led the year’s growth within the sector.
  • Tourism employment rose 3.5% to 2.9 million jobs, with the largest shares in restaurants, bars and nightclubs, passenger transport, and lodging.
  • Domestic spending dominated the industry’s structure, accounting for 94% of total tourism outlays as residents contributed about 83 of every 100 pesos spent in-country; outbound spending represented 6%.
