INEGI Reports Uneven State Gains as Informal Wages Jump in Q2

Pay rose far faster than value added or employment in the latest MEITEF release.

Overview

  • INEGI’s Q2 2025 data show informal-economy remunerations up 8.8% year on year nationwide, versus gains of 1.9% in value added and 2.1% in remunerated jobs.
  • Querétaro posted a 12.7% annual increase in informal pay, ranking behind Tamaulipas (15.2%) and Yucatán (12.8%) for the largest state rises.
  • The sector informal expanded faster than the overall informal economy, with national value added up 3.5% and remunerated positions up 5.8%.
  • Territorial results diverged sharply, with informal value added rising in Guanajuato (+9.9%), Baja California Sur (+9.5%), Aguascalientes (+7.7%) and Mexico City (+7.6%), while Campeche and Quintana Roo fell.
  • Academic analysis frames the figures as evidence of structural labor precariousness and calls for formalization and territorially targeted development policies.
