INE Approves 2026 Operating Budget of 14.1 Billion Pesos After Legislative Cut

Most of the 1,000 million peso reduction was taken from project funds, sharpening a dispute over the institute’s budget autonomy.

Overview

  • The Council set the operating budget at 14,099,968,884 pesos after a 1,000 million peso cut equal to 6.62% of the request.
  • INE officials said 84% of the reduction was pulled from the Institutional Project Portfolio and 16% from the base budget.
  • Major trims target key areas, including 293.6 million pesos from Electoral Training, 187 million from the Voter Registry, 170.8 million from Informatics, 169 million from Organization, and 108 million from Administration.
  • Consejeros condemned the Finance Ministry’s prior removal of a 3,119,405,224 peso precautionary item as arbitrary and illegal, arguing it undermined budgetary autonomy.
  • Management pledged to fund core processes, allocating 395.5 million pesos to launch the 2026–2027 federal cycle, 354.4 million to local elections, and 138 million to the judicial election phase after requiring 14 units to rework allocations.
