IndyCar Standardizes Tweaked Single-Car Fast Six for Remaining 2026 Street Races

The tweak gives quicker qualifiers control of run order to address tire-temperature advantages seen in the trial.

Overview

  • IndyCar, which announced the change Monday, will use the adjusted single-car Fast Six at Long Beach this weekend and at Detroit, Markham, and Washington, D.C.
  • The fastest driver from Segment 2 now picks when to run in the Fast Six, teams must declare primary or alternate tires before lining up at pit out, and each car gets one flying lap from the alternate start/finish line.
  • The update follows the Arlington debut in March, where some drivers said long gaps before runs cooled brakes and tires and may have helped the first car out.
  • If rain or a changing track creates big differences between attempts, officials can revert to the standard multi-car Fast Six or lock in the grid using Segment 2 times.
  • IndyCar says the move spotlights driver skill, keeps tire allotments unchanged, reflects input from teams and FOX Sports, and will be reviewed again after the 2026 season for 2027 use.
