INDOT to Activate Safe Zones Speed Enforcement on I-74 April 1

The pilot targets work-zone speeding to protect crews using automated timing with photo enforcement authorized by a 2023 law.

Overview

  • Enforcement will cover I-74 in Decatur and Shelby counties between mile markers 113 and 134.
  • Truck-mounted devices capture rear license plates when drivers exceed posted work-zone limits by 11 mph or more, with notices mailed to vehicle owners.
  • Violations are valid only when workers are present in the construction zone.
  • The tiered civil fines begin with a no-fine warning, rise to $75 for a second offense, and reach $150 for subsequent offenses, payable within 30 days online, by phone, or by mail.
  • State law caps the pilot at four active zones, with current sites on I-465/I-69, I-70 in Hancock County, I-65 in Jasper County, and I-80/90 in Steuben County, and all collected fines go to the General Fund.
