IndiGo Tells DGCA It Has Surplus Pilots, Vows No Cancellations After Feb. 10

The regulator will keep the carrier under tight scrutiny through the winter schedule with temporary crew‑duty exemptions ending.

Overview

  • In a Jan. 19 review, IndiGo reported 2,400 captains versus a requirement of 2,280 and 2,240 first officers versus 2,050, assuring stable operations once exemptions lapse on Feb. 10.
  • DGCA says enhanced oversight continues, including stationed inspectors, daily and weekly reporting, and close checks on roster integrity, buffers, systems and FDTL compliance.
  • IndiGo remains under a 10% winter schedule cut through late March, with roughly 200 fewer daily flights compared with earlier approvals.
  • The regulator last week levied a Rs 22.2 crore penalty, cautioned CEO Pieter Elbers, warned senior managers, directed changes at the operations control centre, and required a bank guarantee to ensure systemic fixes.
  • A DGCA inquiry found IndiGo’s over‑optimised rostering, thin buffers and system and management shortcomings drove December’s mass cancellations and delays that affected more than 300,000 passengers.
