IndiGo Passenger Tries to Open Exit Twice, Forcing Go-Around in Varanasi

The case underscores strict protocols that protect passengers during in-flight safety scares.

Overview

  • On Saturday night, IndiGo flight 6E-185 from Bengaluru to Varanasi saw a passenger twice reach for an emergency exit, first about 15 minutes after takeoff and again on final approach around 10:20 pm.
  • Cabin crew stopped both attempts and alerted the cockpit, and most reports say the pilot executed a standard go-around before a safe landing at about 10:35 pm.
  • After touchdown, officials handed the passenger to IndiGo security and the Central Industrial Security Force, and police registered a case under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which covers acts that endanger life.
  • Investigators from local police and central agencies questioned the man, and officers in Varanasi said a notice was served and he was later released to his parents while the probe continues.
  • The passenger was identified as Mohammad Adnan from Mau in Uttar Pradesh, and during questioning he offered shifting explanations, including first-time-flight anxiety, not understanding the handle’s purpose, and later claiming he was “possessed by a ghost.”
