India’s Jobless Rate Drops to 4.7% in November, Lowest Since Monthly PLFS Began

Rural hiring plus higher female participation drove the decline, with officials cautioning that month-to-month moves can reflect seasonal effects.

Overview

  • Labour Force Participation Rate rose to 55.8% in November, the highest since April, while the Worker Population Ratio increased to 53.2%.
  • Rural unemployment fell to 3.9% and urban unemployment eased to 6.5%, with rural areas accounting for much of the overall improvement.
  • Female labour force participation climbed to 35.1% as female unemployment declined to 4.8%; the male unemployment rate fell to 4.6%.
  • Youth unemployment for ages 15–29 eased to 14.1% from 14.9% in October, with rural youth showing sharper gains.
  • The monthly PLFS uses the Current Weekly Status approach and surveyed 89,174 households covering 373,229 people, and MoSPI said the latest trends suggest a strengthening labour market.
