India’s April Oil Imports Fall as Gulf Routes Stall and Saudi, UAE Reroute

Pipeline workarounds that bypass the Strait of Hormuz helped steady flows from Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Overview

  • India imported about 4.4 million barrels per day in April, down from 5.2 million in February.
  • Russia stayed India’s top supplier at roughly 1.6 million barrels per day, though volumes slipped from March highs.
  • Saudi deliveries rose to about 685,000 barrels per day and UAE flows climbed to roughly 575,000–591,000, using the East-West and ADCOP pipelines that avoid the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Iraq, Kuwait, and Qatar sent no cargoes to India in April, while Venezuela supplied about 298,000 barrels per day and Iran about 137,000 under a short U.S. sanctions waiver.
  • Maintenance at Nayara cut its imports by over 90% to about 25,000 barrels per day, which in turn reduced India’s intake of Russian crude.
