Overview
- A pursuit that began in Berrien County, Michigan, on Friday morning continued into LaPorte County, Indiana, and ended after the suspect’s truck crashed in a Speedway parking lot near I‑94 and U.S. 421 where shots were fired.
- Indiana State Police say the suspect shot the trooper multiple times with a rifle and the trooper returned fire before the suspect fled the scene.
- The wounded trooper, identified as Sgt. Justin Heflin, was treated at Franciscan Health Michigan City, transferred to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, underwent surgery, and is reported in stable condition.
- After a large multi‑agency manhunt involving about 100 officers, SWAT teams, canines, aviation units, the FBI, U.S. Marshals and the ATF, officers located the suspect’s truck and later found the suspect, identified as Kevin W. Meyers, 54, dead in a nearby field with injuries consistent with a gunshot.
