Indiana Governor Extends Gas Tax Holiday and Pauses 36-Cent Excise Tax

Any next extension would need a special legislative session.

Overview

  • Gov. Mike Braun extended Indiana’s 30-day pause on the 7% gas use tax and ordered a new 30-day suspension of the 36-cent-per-gallon excise tax.
  • State officials said the combined pause should cut pump prices by nearly 60 cents per gallon, which is about a 12.4% break for drivers this month.
  • The gas use tax is a monthly 7% charge tied to the average fuel price, and for May it was calculated at about 23 cents per gallon.
  • Braun said he cannot extend the use-tax pause again under his authority, so any longer relief would require lawmakers to meet in a special session.
  • Kentucky took similar steps the day before, cutting its gas tax by 10 cents per gallon and freezing a planned summer increase.
