Indiana Finalizes A–F School Accountability With Point-Based Grading Model

Initial grades will be issued in December under a model built to support a federal waiver.

Overview

  • The State Board of Education unanimously approved the system on Wednesday, restoring school letter grades for the first time since 2018.
  • Students earn points for proficiency in state reading and math tests plus indicators such as attendance, diploma attainment, and work-based credentials, with schools graded on the average of student points.
  • Graduation rate and SAT proficiency, or an approved alternative for students with disabilities, each serve as standalone indicators worth 10% of the grade-12 rating.
  • The model adds the ACT and the Classic Learning Test as additional pathways for students to earn points tied to college-readiness measures.
  • Initial A–F results are expected by December 2026 with a temporary A cutoff at 85 points before moving to 90, and the model is positioned for use in a federal flexibility request and Indianapolis’s shared-accountability framework.
