Indian Students in Iran Start Overland Exits Via Armenia and Azerbaijan as First Returns Target March 14–15

Student groups say departures rely on verified tickets and personal funds because there is no formal government evacuation.

Overview

  • The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association reports about 100 students, largely from Urmia and Jammu & Kashmir, plan to cross into Armenia and fly via Dubai to New Delhi on March 14–15.
  • Under embassy instructions, students must secure confirmed Armenia–India tickets and submit them for verification before being cleared to travel to the border, with a $10 Armenia visa required on entry.
  • Multiple students have reported cancellations of flights from Armenia and Azerbaijan to Indian cities, creating fresh uncertainty for those preparing to leave.
  • Students from TUMS, IUMS, SBUMS and other institutions are using Armenia or Azerbaijan routes, while a Shiraz cohort is pursuing travel via Qom to Baku for onward commercial flights.
  • Returns are self-financed with reported fares of roughly Rs 60,000–80,000, and the J&K government says buses will meet arrivals in Delhi for onward travel to Srinagar as student bodies coordinate logistics.
