Indian Railways Hits Record LHB Coach Output as Network Nears Full Electrification

Officials credit German-design coaches with higher safety during accidents.

Overview

  • Indian Railways produced more than 4,224 LHB coaches in FY 2025–26 up to November, an 18% rise from 3,590 in the same period last year.
  • Factory contributions in the current period totalled 1,659 coaches from ICF Chennai, 1,234 from MCF Raebareli, and 1,331 from RCF Kapurthala.
  • Output since 2014 has exceeded 42,600 LHB coaches, compared with about 2,300 during 2004–2014, reflecting a nearly 18-fold increase.
  • Broad-gauge electrification now covers roughly 99.2% of the network across 25 states and Union Territories, with more than 33,000 route km electrified since 2019.
  • Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is monitoring the manufacturing drive, which is framed as advancing Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India with plans to further expand capacity.
